Howick historical village trip

Did you know that back in old days, people washed their clothes only once a month?
This is one of the many things I learned at the Howick historical village on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Year 2 have gone to the trip to the Howick Historical Village to learn about our topic "Old and new technology".

At the village, we had four different activities- Washing, Butter making, Unpacking the trunk, and Old school.

We learned so many what people used to do back in old days.
We were also glad that we are living with electricity and all the modern technology which make our life so much easier and faster!

Please look at our photos taken at the village.

One land many cultures

Our topic for this term is called "One land, many cultures" and we are learning about many different cultures such as countries, languages, food, clothes, music, dance, and so on.

Last week, Room 21 talked about what countries we or our families are from and looked at the flags of these countries.
Miss Joo then printed out all the flags of Room 21 and we coloured them in to learn how flags look all different.

We will also be learning icons of different countries in the next few weeks so please bring some photos to share with the class.

Room 21 is very excited to learn different cultures!

Arts week

Week 6 was "Arts week" so Room 21 did a variety of art during this week.

First picture is Samoan pattern art that we did last week with Mrs. Baldwin for Samoan language week. We enjoyed drawing different patterns of Samoa.

Second pictures are Giraffe silhouette art we did for Arts week.
Miss Joo read the picture book called "Giraffes can't dance" and we sketched giraffe pattern then coloured it with oil pastels.
When we finished the pattern background, we cut out giraffe silhouette and glued it in the centre.
It was a hard work colouring the pattern with pastels but we all finished them beautifully!

Next picture is art we call "Crazy hair art" which was a lovely suggestion from Caleb.
Caleb brought the crazy hair art that he did at an afternoon art class and asked Miss Joo if we can do it together as a class, so on Friday, Miss Joo and Caleb showed how to do crazy hair art.
These are our excellent outcome of our crazy hair art. Some of us are still finishing off painting.
Thanks Caleb for suggesting a fantastic art idea!

We all enjoyed creating different kinds of art this week and now our classroom is going to look very colourful with our awesome art so please come in and see them!

Temple visit

On Tuesday, we went to the Buddhist temple in Botany.
We walked on the courtyard of temple which looked like a maze, some of us made wish at the wishing bell, made lotus flower band, learned 3Gs (Good deeds, good words, and good thoughts) and 4Gs (Give convenience, give confidence, give joy, and give hope to others), looked at the giant bell and the drum, and we also went inside the temple too!

Room 21 really enjoyed our new experience and the temple visit!
Miss Joo took so many photos of us and couldn't put all of them on our blog.
Please check out the link below for the photos!

Keeping rocky shore healthy

One of the learnings we are doing for topic is thinking about how to keep our rocky shore clean and healthy so Room 21 designed posters last week.

We discussed slogans, big and bright pictures which can catch people's eyes easily, and pictures that relate to the slogan we chose.

When we go to rocky shore, we need to remember to leave the creatures in the sea instead of taking them home, pick up the rubbish, and take the rubbish back home if we had picnic.

This week we finished our posters because we had to paint some parts of our posters with water colours.

Well done Blake for listening to Miss Joo how bright colours are important in posters!

Well done Laura for the bright slogans! I could clearly see what your poster is about!

I really like your happy sea creatures in your poster Geena and well done for painting your background carefully!

Week 2 of Term One

Room 21 have discussed the goals for 2017 and everyone made one goal at least.
We are going to work hard to achieve these wonderful goals!

Last week we started "All about me" art.
It is an iPhone template with 9 boxes of different things we love such as favourite animal, favourite food, a dream destination etc.
Finally we finished them and they are now displayed on our window in Room 21.

Van Diagram is a diagram are used when we want to know the difference and similarities between some things. We used van diagram to research what children in Room 21 like. It was very fun talking to other people asking if they like this or that or both!

This week our poem of the week is called "Summertime" and we found our first wow word of the year which is the word 'treasure'. We discussed what it means to us, found the definition in the dictionary (something valuable) and also drew pictures of treasure.

2017 is the year of rooster in China. Room 21 children have made roosters that has a Chinese character of rooster on its body. We will be doing some more rooster art over the next few weeks to celebrate the Chinese new year.
